The AP (via NYT) presents a story today about the Guarani in the Bolivian lowlands, who are finally getting lifted out of serfdom by Evo Morales’s policy of appropriating fallow or unproductive land–or land from fugitive landowners and rich American expats–and redistributing it to poor indigenous groups. Speaking of indigenous rights–Mongabay.com has a missive about the ongoing standoff between the Native Federation of the Madre de Dios and Hunt Oil. Hunt Oil wants to start oil exploration in the Peruvian jungle; indigenous groups say they haven’t been properly consulted about this potentially damaging operation in their traditional lands. ” . . . Via Abiding in Bolivia, the AP has a good article out on the growing power of indigenous peoples throughout Latin America. No surprise: Bolivia’s been busy empowering its indigenous population. Not only are they the majority, but President Evo Morales is indigenous himself. It’s a recommended read.
