From Bolivian Express.
On May 19, 2008, three young Norwegian women, Stina Brendemo Hagan, then 17 years old; Madeleine Rodriguez, then 20; and Christina Øygarden, then 18—along with Madeleine’s then 2-year-old daughter, Alicia—arrived at the Cochabamba airport to fly back to Norway after a three-week holiday in Bolivia. None of them made
their flight. Airport police [...]

Last year, before the recall referendum that threw Manfred Reyes Villa out as the prefect of Cochabamba department, I was sitting in a bar in the city of Cochabamba listening to a man spew “Morales is a drug dealer” nonsense. Well, now Reyes Villa wants to subsidize coca chewing in a obvious pander to the [...]

Kudos, for now, to the Obama administration for its recent announcement to not interfere in states that have legalized medical marijuana. It’s a small, but important, first step in ending the disastrous War on Drugs. Read Glenn Greenwald for more.

According to the ABI, the U.N. will begin the process of decriminalizing the chewing of coca leaves. Nevertheless, ATPDEA trade preferences between Bolivia and the United States, which are dependent on Bolivia’s drug-fighting strategy, are still suspended–even though Bolivia’s drug interdiction forces have been shutting down drug factories left and right. Now [...]

Disappointing news out of Washington: The Obama administration is standing by the previous administration’s decision to drop Bolivia from ATPDEA, which gave Bolivia preferential trade treatment in exchange for Bolivia’s drug interdiction. At issue is Bolivian president Morales’s refusal to conflate cocaine–which the country is fighting effectively–with coca.

There’s been a coup in Honduras, with the military spiriting away Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, in pajamas, in the early morning hours on Sunday. At issue is a referendum scheduled for yesterday that would begin a long process to amend the Honduran constitution so that Zelaya could be re-elected. Although the referendum was non-binding, several [...]

IKN has got the charts that show that Bolivia’s confiscation of drugs has increased every year since 2000–and it’s on target for this year, too, even after tossing out the DEA late last year. Bolivia, which is obviously known for its cocaine production, is also stamping down on its marijuana industry that’s centered around Beni [...]

Couple of items today catch my eye:
Clinton fesses up to the Mexicans and says the “‘insatiable’ appetite in the United States for illegal drugs is to blame for much of the violence ripping through Mexico,” according to Reuters. And then she promises more guns: “Washington plans to ramp up border security with a $184 million [...]
